Before You Leave Your Home
- Download and verify your phone number on a few key apps if you won’t have access to your phone number (i.e., a data-only eSIM)
- Rejsekort: Transit app for easy city travel
- Rejsebillet: Transit app for regional trips (this can also do what the Rejsekort app does, it’s just more annoying)
- Donkey Republic: Bike sharing rental, much like Lime or Lyft bikes in the US
- Bring a swimsuit, if you’d like to swim in the harbor. We have extra towels so no need to bring that. Regardless of time of year, you can swim and sauna.
- Bring an eye mask, if you’re sensitive to light when sleeping. This mostly applies from March to October. In contrast, in the winter it can be only 7 hours of sunlight (8:30 to 15:30).
- Bring a rain jacket or umbrella. The weather is unpredictable, and we are very prone to rain. It may also be chillier than you might think.
- In Denmark, the currency is the Danish krone (DKK). You most likely do not need cash, but if you did, you should use your preferred international debit card at a local ATM in Copenhagen. Most places aside from a few restaurants do not take American Express, so just use your normal preferred credit card for international travel.
Getting to the Apartment by Train from the Airport
- Take the M2 line from the airport and transfer to the M3 line. Metro trains are automated and run every 3–5 minutes.
- Upon exiting baggage claim, the metro entrance will be at the end of the corridor and up the escalator for the yellow M2 line. If you have the Rejsekort or Rejsebillet app, you’ll use your phone for ticketing. Otherwise, buy a paper ticket at one of the red kiosks.
- Copenhagen Airport / København Lufthavn is at the end of the line. Some time before you board a train, start the Rejsekort check-in or buy a ticket on the Rejsebillet app (ending location: Næstvedgade 16).
- Ride until you transfer at Kongens Nytorv station, exit, and go up the escalator and follow signs to go back down to the red M3 line. The M3 line is a loop — take the M3 train towards Østerbro and exit at Trianglen station. From there, walk to the apartment.
- An alternative is taking an S-train instead of the M3 metro for that leg, which requires changing train types.
Arriving at Our Apartment
The Entry
Shoes off please. Feel free to leave them at the door or put them in the closet. You can also hang up your jacket on the door or hooks — do this especially if it is raining.
Your Bedroom
Your bedroom is our work room. This is where we typically work at the table, read on the window sill, and pick out our clothes — Danish apartments don’t have separate closets. Your bed is either already made or we will make your bed in the evening but let us know if you need more air in your mattress. There is a light switch for the ceiling lamp and the mushroom-shaped lamp is turned off and on by tapping anywhere on the side.
The Bathroom
Also known as a water closet here and marked with a WC on the door. Your towel is hanging on the back of the door.
- The shower: Make sure the sides of the shower curtain are inside the glass (about one hook on each side) before you start showering to prevent water spraying out. Turn the left knob away from you to turn on the rainfall shower head and the right knob to adjust temperature. Squeegee the glass and the floor when done.
- The toilet: Do not use the tempting big flush button. Use the little button and press it a bit longer if you need to.
The Kitchen
The fridge is the cabinet closest to the doorway and the dishwasher is to the left of the sink. Cutlery and dishes are to the left of the dishwasher.
- Drinking water: There is a water filter on the sink faucet. It’s defaulted to unfiltered for doing dishes and washing hands. Flip the tab two stops up for filtered water. It’ll blink a blue light. Cups are above the sink.
- Trash: Trash is separated meticulously here. From left to right under the kitchen island, we have (1) plastic and TetraPak, (2) paper and cardboard, (3) all other trash, and an empty bin (there are two bins per foot pedal trash can). (4) Compost is at the far right. (5) If the bottle or can you have says “Pant” in the circle with arrows, then rinse it out and leave it by the drying rack. We return those at the grocery store.
